  • Notchy gear selection

Hey guys, new surf owner here. Have just bought a 1993 2.4 manual with 27000 miles on the clock. I am finding 1st to 2nd selection and reverse selection rather notchy, and selecting reverse in particular on occasion gives a rather unpleasant grind sound. Is this to be expected (dont remember it on the test drive) or something requiring remedy?

Could be the clutch is not disengaging fully . This can be due to air in the system , weak master /slave cylinder seals , or a knackered clutch . Also if the gearbox oil is low can cause the same fault .
Make sure there is no after market mats under the pedals as these can also restict full depression of the cluch pedal, throttle .

Also the bush the lever pivots in wears, its on top of the gearbox.

          Bob,

Thanks for advice. In sunny Aberdeen. Bought the motor from Edinburgh. The dealer (MacKay Trading) has been excellent. Already gone through a new head, radiator and water pump on warranty in three weeks of ownership.

Love the car. Owned everything under the sun and its the best car I've had despite the few set backs.

              re notchy gear selection

Dealer's gonna try replacing master cylinder; he reckons its hydraulics.

              Thanks for your comments.
