just returned from devon in my 93 surf ssrx, seems to be a common place to break down. i towed a caravan there and about 10 miles from the site lots of steam from bonnet and guage in the red. having topped back up again i soldiered on knowing i didnt have far to go. a few miles further and the guage shoots up again but this time a managed to stop before it blew off steam, more than i can say for myself though. i made it to my site and joined the rac and called them out, by this time i had noticed i was blowing coolant out of the overflow so i feared the worst. any way long story short car went to garage no thermostat in as rac had cut it out. new cap was fitted and all seemed well. drove it for 3 days no probs then it overheated again. topped up with water again and drove on, stayed cool and towed caravan back to oxford from devon with no probs although it was an anxious journey. gonna buy a thermostat tomorrow and fit that, hoping that will solve my probs, surely the head cant be cracked if i travelled that far with no probs can it??? any ideas please.

only had my surf since friday, but looking at the forums, several mention the critical bleeding of the air that is needed when topping the coolant. Perhaps it was origanally a sticky thermostat & then poor bleeding the second time. Upon the last fill it might have expelled all the air hence no further problems (hopefully) (just a theory)
By the way wot are you doing clogging up our quiet devon roads with a caravan formartin

Could have been a duff sta or rad cap and because coolant was pumped out the expansion tank the system would have been low on coolant so over heated again. Top up via rad cap and make sure there is only a couple of inches of water in the expansion tank as indicated by the fill line on the side. They can be a bit of pig to get the air out so just check levels for a few days as the air can suddenly move. Both heaters to open as well.Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.
