  • Engine Knocking...

    Hi All,
I’ve a ’92 2nd Gen 2.4, which has developed a ‘knocking’ under load. The noise appears to be from towards the bottom of the engine. This leads me to two questions:

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the Belfast area?

Failing that, does anyone have any suggestions as to diagnosing the fault?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Keith

I was introduced to Anthony Kelly, who works on 4x4's and drives a Surf himself. He is about 4 miles south of Ballynahinch on the Downpatrick Road. His work number is 07817160852. So far I have found him a straight talking decent guy.... tell him I gave you his number.

    Good luck - David Bradley

      Thanks David.

Over the last few days, I seem to have eliminated the knocking noise through one of the following:

Complete new exhaust, as the existing one had a few small holes in the downpipe.
Cambelt, tensioner, spring & idler gear swap - was getting close to due.
Engine flush & oil filter change

Also replaced the glow plugs as they needed longer before starting in the morning, and replaced the viscous coupling oil whilst I had the fan out.

Started her up with crossed fingers this morning, and all seems good - drive to work was much quieter!

Many thanks to all the posts on the board for helping me through...

      Keith

possibly the idler or tensioner on the cambelt or the oil being bad or low, see how it goes but if the issue has gone the what you have done must have cured.

my first thought were big ends..... eek!
well, that was a bad idea!
