  • ARB drop links

    Just a quickie.
Are the arb drop links enginneered to ensure that the only way they come off is with a grinder?

I am having issues with the nut/hex key.

Obviously the hex key has to be locked or when you turn the 17mm nut it will rip out the sealing boot?

Any tip or tricks or is it just a case of new drop links?
Tried wd and brute force but seeing the amount of bow in my hex key, something is gonna break.

Extemely lucky to ever get them off, clean allen key hole thoroughly, lots of WD40, wire brush thread, loosen a tad, WD40, then tighten, then more WD40 on the exposed thread, etc.... for ages. Once the allen key has spun out its a waste of time trying anymore.

Then I normally just cut them off and fit new ones.

Some have a hex on the other side, which makes it easier to grip, but this is usually aftermarket ones, so if original its not there.

If you've got uprated rear coils and good shocks you can throw the rear ARB in the bin.

(unless you've got a spare wheel on the roof obviously.. )

Better put it back on for the MOT though.

That's an interesting point, after reading the last thread where the tester failed the guys truck for no ARB I asked my friend (MOT tester) about it. Who simply said if it's not there it can't be tested therefore can not be failed. Also as it's not a UK vehicle they can not check their data sheets for info.

Unless when removing ARB components are left then it has missing parts !

What if the steering wheel isn't there, would it fail the MOT?

Yeah, thats right, unlike a steering wheel the ARB isn't something you really need, if you take it all off then its fine. If you leave any brackets then they'll fail it as broken or missing.

Most older Hilux pickups don't have them anyway. New cars with active suspensions don't have them either.

Old tech, limits offroad performance, bin them and good riddence.
