Thanks for the links, those will definitely come in handy in the future.

I went back and talked to him and he realized his mistake. He ordered the correct parts and checked out the front end of the vehicle for me. I'm going to have to do the tie rods and bearings come spring. He's doing the upper control arm on the drivers side as well as replacing the some steering part (I can't remember what he told me right off... all I know is that he had to buy it at Toyota and it was $394). It was apparently the part that caused my wheel to come out of alignment and the clanking noise. Getting it back at the end of the week so hopefully all is well.

Can only really think of the steering box that would be that expensive, if it was so badly worn that it was jumping teeth under heavy loads (like on full lock) would cause your symptons but would have felt awful for ages before hand.

Unsual though, I've never had to change one, apart from leaky seal.

      Fingers crossed it fixes it.

Hi all I didn't have any noises until I had to change the steering idler arm(£70 from roughtrax) for mot, now I have the knocking noise on full lock to the right but I noticed the steering wheel is slightly out to the left prob bout 5 degrees. so im thinking if I wind the steering back at the trak rod ends enough to bring the steering wheel back in line then bring the wheels back straight it should be enough to pull the steering away from the stops on full lock thus eliminating the noise I hope, any comments?
