  • are my brakes safe ???

    Hi all
My rear brakes have started a slight squeel when braking, obviously need changing but im in the Isle of Wight at the mo, and have to tow my caravan back to wales.
2 issues, is there any "grace" period when they start to squeel
and are they safe to tow.
If not, whats the chances of finding brakes on the IOW.
    thanks

Get them checked by a garage, they may just be dirty.

If they are worn 'to the metal', they need fixed now. There is no 'grace' period when brakes are worn to the metal. Do not use the truck at all, nevermind to tow something if you even suspect the brakes may be faulty.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Are you positive it's the rear brakes that are making a noise?
Did you not give the truck a service before travelling 200+ miles towing a caravan?

Anyway, ask at these places if they can check/supply and fit your brakes....

The rears don't have wear indicators like the fronts, if they are making a noise you normally don't have any friction material left.

They are pretty standard, 89-on mk3 pickup rear shoes will fit.

Thank you all, sorry for delay, but between being on Hols, an TALKTAL screwing up my BB, fallen behind with lots of things.
Any way, had an aquaintance look at brakes, and 3/4s of meat left on them, however, the one that squeeled/squeaked the most was wear diagonally across the leading edge. He filed as best he could, and clicked over the brake adjuster. IT then squeeked continuously. But when i left IOW and got as far as Swindon, its stopped and hasnt returned.
Thanks anyway for all the help.
