Fitting temp gauge

Hi, does anyone know the internal diameter of the rad top hose on a 2.4 as i want to order a temp sensor adapter pipe but dont fancy taking the hose off untill install time. I assume the top hose is where it should be mounted as this is closest to the existing temp sensor?

32mm or 1 1/4".

On the 2.4 auto there is a blanking plug on the stat housing you can unscrew and fit sensor into. Not sure if it's on the manual as well.

yea, i can see one just under where the main hose comes from. Any idea what thread this would be?

No but my temp gauge came with a selection of fittings and one of them fitted.

(it was a TIM gauge if that helps)

M16 X 1.5. If you want to fit a gauge that has a sender with a 1/8" NPT fitting you need a M16 X 1/8" NPT.

Well, i got my temp gauge fitted to day (been suffering from man flu since wed) and went for a quick run around.
It seems to sit somewhere between 82 - 88 depending if it's on flat or hills.
This seems a little low to me as i was expecting 90-95.I fitted the temp sensor in in the thermostat housing in place of the blanking plug (ta wishbone)
nice easy job.
I am going to re-do the temp sensor earth tomorrow but i'm sure it was clean.
What is interesting is that all the way from 65-88 the factory fitted gauge was always in the middle!

One job off the list but dozens more to do!

If fitted in the housing an extra earth is not needed.

The temp sensor had two leads coming out of it, one for signal and one for the earth. I earthed the lead incase it wasn't common to the sensor body.

I'm fitting mine today. I've covered the sensor's thread with ptfe tape to make a pukka seal. So I'm going to need that second wire for earth as that's insulated the sensor. What route did you use for the sensor wire, back in to the cabin? I can see a blank grommet top left of the engine bay. Is that easy to access from inside or will I have to pull loads of dashboard out?

hi, my cable followed some others that ran close to the second battery, behind the air filter and power steering res and through the grommet in the top corner on the passanger side. after poking an amount of wire through this grommet it was easy to hook under the glove box and ty-wrap it to other stuff untill it got to the gauge. the only bit of trim i had to remove was the little storage box under the radio to fit the gauge. i used a feed from the radio.

Once you have got your gauge fitted and operating, could you tell me the usual temps that you get as it would be nice for comparison.

Mine reads between 88 - 96 depending on road conditions. I haven't done a motorway run or towed yet.

Thanks for that. I was looking right at it and not seeing it. It was simple as you said. My sensor is in the top pipe to the rad. I've taken it for a quick drive and a 30 min blatt down the motorway (what a joy to have the thing to myself without the kids - ears ringing to 'maiden) - It didn't drop below 82 or go above 86. I'll be doing some longer drives soon so I'll update if that changes.
