    Hi lloydy,
I have an almost identical problem on my '91 ssr ltd.
My check light works most of the time but occasionally it is really dim to the point where you would think it's not working(have to squint to tell)
I just assume that maybe there was a poor connection in the dash area as i have no fault codes either. I have had other problems with poor connections on my surf so i thought this most likley answer.
It doesn't seem to signify any engine problem as i have had fantastic reliability in the extreeme cold that we have just had.

    Non consternationes.

          Hi again lloydy
Bought my surf about 4 months ago with cold starting issues.
Ended up replacing the glow plugs which made a small difference.
Then realised that the fuel filter/primer head was leaking air in, changed this and replaced the flexi fuel lines around the engine including the leak off and the difference is amazing. Press the primer button until it goes hard then press it hard again (mine leaked fuel around the button quite badly)
If you need to buy a new filter head try your local deisel specialist (mine cost £45 although slightly different)

thanks for the reply gazza i have changed the glow plugs already and the relay i was thinking it could be the fuel pump head like you mentioned ill go out and pump it up rock hard this morning and see how it starts i should have thought about this earlier as i had the same problem with my old nissan terrano. thanks again mate
