i'm no stranger to engines but i'm a little concerned as i have what seems to be a diesel knock at around 1500rpm, now the truck performs as well as can be expected from a 2.4 but as this is my first surf i really have no comparison with another 2.4 so, it could be normal for a slight diesel knock as the turbo starts to spool up but i'm getting very little smoke when the engines under load but if i blip the throttle when it's parked i do get faint black puff of smoke,
although i had a xantia that did the puff of smoke when stationary if you blipped the throttle so i'm not too worried about that, but i don't think i should be hearing diesel knock at 1500rpm, all seems to be in order with the truck water level and pressure is fine, oil useage is minimal, mpg is reasonable, so all in all all the usual pointers are ok so i'm not sure what to think, i think the old adage of "if it's not broke leave it" might be used on this one. one thing, it had an injector pump fitted and replaced using the original marks i made on the pump before removal and transfered to the replacement pump making sure the marks were as exacty as could be, but i can't remember if the noise was there before so i could just be chasing my ass looking for faults any ideas?

Are you sure it's diesel knock or just a worn engine noise?

Oil in good condition? Semi-synthetic oil will make the engine more clattery.

Whats the oil pressure like at cruising speeds?

No good comparing the Surfs diesel injection to something like a Xantia, as the Surfs are agricultural by comparison.

hi bushwacker yep i thought about the comparison but my xantia was mechanical not the later common rail, anyhow it's running semi synthetic but it's quiet on tickover no noise apart from general expected noise, it begins as the revs are lifted also it will miss when in P and N but on the road no miss at all, i have put the miss down to being stationary so it doesn't overload the TC as i have had this on an auto mondeo which it was in built as a safety measure, anyhow i've just been delving back to 2005 on the archives and found a suitable answer, i think the IP timing is slightly advanced so the ecu is over advancing due to the base timing already being advanced i'm going to go and check now and i'll let you know
        cheers

          Update....
the IP timing was out so i've dealt with that as it was advanced anyhow i still have a bit of a misfire which when it does miss i get a puff of blue/grey smoke which clears quickly then when it does miss again same thing, it's looking like a dodgy injector, it's had injector cleaner through as well as a fuel filter full of ATF and it's still not quite right, is it worth looking for a set of s/hand injectors or getting a set of reconditioned ones, advice at the moment would be appreciated.

can you hold on to them as i'll have to ok it with her indoors first, i keep getting the "can't it wait til after christmas" speech so i'll have to butter her up first, trouble with that it gets expensive and messy, the price of butter has gone through the roof recently
