My 2.4 turbo surf did what appears to be common to most and wildly overheated 30 miles from my sheffield home on the way back from scotland. It did exactly what everyone else says and blew the water back through the expansion tank. It is definitely, at least, the head gasket that has gone but my dilemma is how far to go. I never drove it in the red on overheat so I didn't risk busting the head but do I change the gasket or go the whole hog and change the head. I love the truck and want to keep it but with the wife writing off our other car two days after the surf blew and the builders in at home money is tight. Any advice?

The head gasket rarely goes on a 2.4 surf, change the thermostat 1st as it could be jammed. for now remove it to see what happens if you still have the problem the head is likely to have gone. you need to get it pressure tested to clarify this.

observe your resavoir tank if there is a bubble .after u have pressure test,just try this first. replace the rad cap and thermo. check the engine fan (clutch fan)or add silicon oil on it.and also check the air con fan located under the engine if that 2 fan is ok they have a two speed low and high.much better if you pressure wash your cooling system and overhaul your radiator

i just bought 93' 2LTE 2 months ago and seemed to be doing fine at first but now im having the same overheating problem here..might try coolant flush, add transmission oil coz im lacking power (maybe the reason why the engine has to work harder that causes the overheat), clean thermostat (if possible to clean) and buy new rad cap..

The first thing I did was check to see if there was any water in the oil, as that was what happened when my BMW took it's head out. After that I called for help on the forum, If you look a bit back a week you'll see the replies. Thankfully it appears that my head survived (for now) so a flush, new stat, and new cap (from Roughtrax about £26) appears to have cleared the problem.

this is a follow up on my previous post..was preparing to flush all my coolant and checking my automatic transmission fluid and noticed that it was almost at the minimum level..wondered for a moment and checked the trans pan..there it was...a leak in my transmission oil pan. Quickly added 2 liters of Dexron II grade ATF and tested right after.....my truck now is running cool..never did the coolant flush..could i be right that my engine was working hard that it overheats because my ATF was in minimum level?
