Turbo info needed please!

Hi all,

I have had my 1992 2.4 manual surf for about a month now and I love the her bits but am growing tired of the excessive use of oil and the smoking. The week after buying the vehicle the turbo gave up all together, luckily I found a 2nd hand one for £65 and this one is keeping me going just about but still using oil and smoking. This one was not in the best condition as it had a bit of play... but at least it spins freely and has reduced the smoke slightly. I have found a new turbo from the states @ £240 postage included which sound too good to be true, is it? I think the rings are ok as it the compression seems good. Could it be something else or is it my 2nd hand turbo with a bit of play causing the problem?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Check on the induction side of the turbo and see how much oil if any is present, it could also be worn valve guides or seals on valve guides as well as piston rings. I've never stripped anything down yet on mine so not that familiar yet with the engines, but those are the 3 possibile causes on any engine fitted with a turbo.
Couldnt you refurb your spare turbo cheaper than buying a new one possibly ?

I got a refurb kit for under £30 on Ebay from sunny China, http://tinyurl.com/3xtg8dh, then spent about 4 hours stripping/cleaning and rebuilding an old Ct20.

Easy job, apart from the hoofing big circlip on the back of the compressor, but only took a few mins to make a 'special tool' for that

I might be interested. Does it have much play? The second hand one that I bought had what I thought was a very little amount of play but she is still smoking a bit, how much play is too much? The turbo also makes a loud whining noise when it is cold, is this normal? Thanks

I will double check the turbo for you for play.It came out of a running truck which i bought and was going to mot but it cost to much for the repairs.I was going to fit the complete engine into another truck but i ended up breaking that truck aswell.
The turbo worked fine in the truck it came out of and no noises etc from it.
I will let you know in the next couple of days on what it is like
