Trailer Lights

My 91 LN130 appears to have a standard Surf towbar with a 12N socket, however when I plug in my trailer (all the lights work correctly) there is no trailer flasher indication, audible or visual. Is this legal? Are they not required in Japan? All advise welcome.

i shouldn't worry to much about it as the first uk owner probably disconnected it.My 3rd gen only the o/s indicator buzzer sounds and not the n/s
