    - the valves are opening and closing all the time, where the valves close against its seat this is where the valve face and valve seat wear, which in turn makes the valve stem protrude more in the head, which in turn makes the clearance between the shim and camshaft smaller.

    tell us what clearances you get?
    However the Cam also wears and this will cause the tappet clearance to increase. Cam will generally wear more than the valve faces will erode as it is spinning rather than just opening and closing (except if the engine is really out of tune and running too lean in which case the valve seat or valve itslef will burn and erode quickly).

    The 2.4 Cam is pretty robust though and doesn't wear quickly.

      lmao.. yes smurf i do have a kettle... when looking for my workshop your lookin for nitrous solutions as this is the name we trade under at the yard,

      now back to the tapping thats now driving me round the twist,

      the engine runs fine and pulls like a train, i have checked co and hydro carbon content in the exhaust and all is very aceptable so would assume the injectors are fine, and the noise is not like a derv knock its defonately a tap, i have found a company that will supply any size shim for the tappets so will just go for it one day and delv into the rocker cover i suppose.

        the cam shouldnt wear because it has a film of oil between it and the shim.whereas the valve and valve seat has no lubrication.the only time the cam wears is if there is a lack of lubrication.

          Which will be quite often as the oil thickens when getting towards change time.

            '' so many questions '' and erm not realy many solutions ,,'' ive heard most of them and i'm not too impressed after all we just go by word of mouth or past experiances etc..

            ok heres my thesis on the matter... i'm an ex rover mechanic ( not fitter ahem ahem '' .. worked on them since i left school before owning two scania trucks which i service my self)) intro out of the way
            i havnt owned my surf that long so i'm not fully aware of most problems you experianced surfers have , i did however encounter the head problem which i sorted my self and is running peachy '' however i have a occurant tapping noise too , changed shims adjusted them then used oversized ones blah blah.

            still my noise is there '' these tappet clearances are they correct '' seems to large of a gap to me '' 20 in and 40 ex '' hmmmm ..
            but could be as a few have pointed out duff injectors but when a engine ran perfectly smooth before head problems '' well this was sure to puzzle most '' ... any one throw some real light here and put an end to ' well '' maybe '' could be possibley this etc ..

            but what do i know
