  • 4 wd engagement problems 3.0 td 3rd Gen

Hello - For a long time now I have put off tackling the non engagement of 4 wd by my Surf. The car has been looked at auto box specialists and in their opinion the problem is electrical. The 4 wd computer controller located on the inner wind has been replaced .....but this is not the problem. I presume that there is a relay somewhere in cab that shoud be activated when 4wd is engaged. As my car does not "click" is it fair to presume that a relay may be at fault. If so can anyone tell me where it is? I have dismantled the dash and have bits everywhere but there are no signs of a relay.

    Thanks

      The relay

Cheers Mik - Is you surf is the 2.4?.. which I think is configured differently to the 3rd gen 3L. I'll have another look to see if there is another relay where you suggest. There's a few boxes with a spaghetti of wiring running into them that appear to be connected wth the ABS system - I doubt that these are linked to the 4wd though.

just off the button or when shifting using the stick to?

most 3rd gen problems i've seen have been the solonoid on the t/case playing up.

          4WD problems

Cheers TonyN - it's both when the button is pressed and also when the stick is shifted around that it fails to engage. The auto box bods advised that they were able to remotely power up the solenoids and everything worked as it should. The problem wis that the solenoids are not getting any power - hence my quest to track down this elusive relay. I have contacted Toyota who have identified the part number and where it should be but I am damned it I can find it. Any ideas?

            4 WD problems

I've been using the 4 wheel drive switch on my Surf extensively this week for obvious reasons, yes we have snow on the Isle of Wight, it can be a bit intermittent how easily it goes in, seems to have got better with a bit of use, I have only used it rarely in the past year ( yes i know ,lightweight)!
