  • Radiator blew up!

Driving back from the lake district yesterday my radiator blew up in quite spectacular fashion while doing 70mph on the motorway (see pic).

Anyone got any sources for a new rad or any tips or instructions for replacing?

    Thanks

P.S. Oh and thanks to the RAC for giving me an estimate of 30 mins but actually taking 3 hours to recover me, nothing like sitting on the side of the M3 at 1 in the morning

I have a 2.4 that did that, well not as bad as that but it was all distorted like yours, and it cost me £150 inc vat @ Brighton radiators, plus a new set of hoses cap and thermostat.

I have heard of a couple of radiators here in Australia doing that. One guy completely destroyed his.Top and bottom tanks went I think.I have had the top tank replaced on mine because of cracking around the top hose inlet.

I have always wondered why the radiator is not on mounts with rubber bushes.Surely being directly bolted to the bodywork is not good. This does not allow any movement during expansion and contraction of the radiator. If mine needs replacing at anytime I will be looking at what is needed for this.

Try Wessex Radiators in Lowford, near Bursledon mate. Not to far from you.

They rebuilt by top tank on my rad when it corroded from sheet metal!

        Top boys.

          why?

The question you should be asking is why did it blow up!! Mine did the same on the M4 not so long ago... looked great at the time with all that white foam and steam coming out!!
But then i had to replace my whole engine!! Not so funny then i thought!!
