FNG saying "HI" to you all, got a Surf after reading all your comments, but still dont know why the O/D light is on telling me its OFF.
Why not tell me when its ON as the best way to drive our beasts is O/D OFF.

OR HAVE i GOT IT ALL THE WRONG WAY ROUND????

Mate i think you should drive with o/d on. This way you will save on fuel. I switch it off when going up/down steep hills etc. turning it off gives you higher gear.
Anyhow hello from another fellow newbie........muncher

      To Muncher

According to manual O/D only has 3 gears, and when OFF there are 4 gears , therefore saving fuel, due to lower RPM for gear changes???????

Nah, other way round. As muncher says, leave od on for normal use, off when extra pulling pwr required, towing, hills etc. You will achive greater economy and lower revs with OD switched on. Try it and see, get to about 60mph and switch it off, you'll see your revs rise as it drops a gear.

          Yeah.

Overdrive is actually the 4th gear on the box rather than a true Overdrive. With O/D off you have a 3 speed Auto with O/D on you have a full 4 speed Auto with a true direct drive top gear.

          Cheers

            Thanks fellas, Muncher and Andy.
Guess my manual has it wrong way round, as I said wondered why light was on when OFF........................... it was weird, driving with a light ON on the dash.

            Thanks again

You get the same with the suspension set on Hard - soft is the normal setting so light off, hard is not normal (or so Toyota think) do the light is on.

I keep my O/D off around town as I get bet economy that way and the gearbox isn't searching for the right gear quite so often. Out of town, O/D goes on straight away.

              Cheers

Very good point, didnt think of it that way, comparing it to the Suspension light.
I know when to use O/D now, also like to say what a really helpful bunch of people there are on this Forum.

Can I take it that the O/D on 2.4 td is the same as ECT on the 3.0?????

No KEVIN ECT or Electronically Controlled Transmission. When used it holds the gears longer before changing up. its like a sports mode
