fuel problems 2.4td

hi i have a surf 2.4 td it has run like a dream for the last 2 years then last week it started to cut out . i have changed the fuel filter but no luck and now it will only run on tick over when you rev it up the engine miss fires and it kicks blue and white smoke out off the exhaust, any ideas?

The head's gone? Do, or have someone else do, a sniffer test on it as a starting point.

Some do, some don't. Mine wouldn't start at all, but some can run reasonably well.

It may not be the head, but it is the first thing I'd check.
