Leaky rear diff & information

Got out of the surf yesterday and got a whiff of ode du gearbox had a quick look underneath and saw the rear differential was covered in oil upon inspection i realized it was diff oil leaking from the pinion seal. I got hold of the propshaft and gave it a wobble and had no play in the shaft so i assume its the seal thats knackered after all its done 220 000 km what i need to know is what is the backlash tolerances for the Surf cant seen to find it in the Haynes manual also can i just put the handbrake on and wheels on the floor to get the pinion nut off obviously after doing all marking up so everything goes back in relation to where it came from ant tips would be greatly appreciated
