Noise when starting

I need some advice. Since I have had my Surf. a 1991 2.4 diesel auto. Everytime I started her there has been a whirring sound prior to the Bleep to say come on start me. Over the past few days this sound has become intermitant. I turn the key the dash lights come on the sounds starts then stops then starts then the bleep and she starts ok.

Could someone tell me what the sound is and should it now be intermitant or has something gone wrong.

Sorted

Spent the evening with the car last night. Found the fault. A slight shorting on the battery lead. Little bit of tape and a cable tie and all seems to be ok.

Tonight I will fit a second Battery (Leisure). And Saturday off round France.
