  • Burping Procedure

Ok got everthing back together at last. Got the Surf started, stuck front & rear heaters on full heat but got no circulation. Realise it is a question of venting so pulled off heater hose on firewall & back filled with water, still no circulation. Stuck the front end in the air now on ramps with the rad cap off hoping it will vent itself. Only been running it for five minute intervals incase I crack the new head. Top of the rad gets warm(temp gauge just over 1/4 way) just cold air through heater,no issues before with heater so must be air lock. Has anyone got any hints and tips on burping the system?

Thanks for that info Wiggy. Had a good read of that lot. Flushed out the system, back filled it via a hose ect, still no go. Stuck the front end up on ramps now to see if it settles & vents itself (rad cap left off). If it still doesnt work I am going to cut into the return pipe from the heater matrix & install a tee piece with a manual vent on.

Right, starting to get cheesed off with this surf. Cut a manual vent into heater return. Still no flow. I vented the flow side upto heater control on firewall, got water there. Proceed to vent the return thinking logically that the flow would push through to the highest point but no...I can run the engine with the temp gauge 1/2 way & take the cap off the vent ...no water...no air???Turn off the engine & it will vent up. Does the heater only work once the thermostat has reached 82*? It takes about 10 mins from cold for the stat to operate ..I am beginning to wonder if the water pump is knackered.
Had no o/heating issues before the cambelt let go & the heating circuit worked fine. I have also flushed the radiator through from the top hose till it came clean out of the engine. GRRRRRR ...Any ideas gents? i thought fitting a 3l upgraded head was supposed to flow better??.

The heater system works independantly and does not rely on the thermostat to open. The coolant circulates through engine, then the heaters and then back to engine below the thermostat.

I never have a problem with air locks and wonder why some do. If the hoses are connected correctly, the heater valves open and you fill slowly as the engine warms up it should work.

All I can think of is you have the thermostat installed with the little valve at the bottom. This may cause an airlock but shouldn't restrict flow through heaters. Remove the thermostat, fill and bleed the system. If you get the air out then reinstall the thermostat.

Just a quick update. Finally got sorted at the cost of a new 3l head, cambelt, tensioner, valves, thermostat & rad cap. Been out and about Surfing again(heaters front & rear working) and will venture further once the trust is built back up.Thanks for everyone who helped with the various questions. If any one finds themselves in this position, have a go. Pull it apart, label everything & re-build it. Never done this before but wont worry about doing it again (except the cost).
                  Thanks again.

Good news, well done. What was the old head like?

Old head was fine.No overheating issues. Previous owner had replaced cambelt & tensioner but didnt tighten up one of the tensioner bolts which unwound itself . It (the bolt)
pierced the cambelt & wedged itself up at the cam pulley snapping the belt. I have the old head here with 3 or 4 valves stuck in it. I used the surf for 2-3 weeks daily with no issues till the cambelt snapped.
