what does the sump guard protect?

hi all need a bit of help. was having a look at the sump i see it isnt guarding the sump but guarding a heat release convector or something. i have seen these on some surfs and other surfs dont have them. i cant find it in Haynes or toyodiy.com. i realise they wouldnt put it on if not needed but if i take it off can i then get rid of the convector grill because air can now circulate under the engine?? dont know if it makes sence but i hope you get what i am trying to go on about.

its also a pain because when take the surf to get dirty is a camel's hoof to get all the countryside out of it!

Air con radiator. Remove it and you have no air con.

thanks for that! well i dont think the air con works so probably remove it and if get around to it remove it out the engine bay, its fairly cluttered in there as is.

I'd leave the sumpguard there, as it does protect a few other items, and gives you something to slide with when your front wheels are off the ground.

isnt that technically the bash plate? I thought the sump guard was the bit of plate under, er, the sump...... or is that protecting the diff?
