at last the surf burst in to life after a lot of head scratching and some help from here and a look at a 3.0 that wasn't much help and problems getting the fuel bled it now runs.
as i have not driven an auto before i have this question
should it creep when it is put in gear but not given any throttle

Easiest way to stop it is to press your foot on the big pedal to the left of the throttle pedal.

Put it into neutral or park or pull the hand brake up. Most people just keep their foot on the brake, but the correct thing to do is to apply the hand brake and select neutral.
