right i have just about finished putting the engine back in my surf. but as i did not remove it. it has been a bit of a jigsaw puzzle putting it back together and now i need some help with the cooling pips that i have taking this photo. can anyone tell me what should connect to them. is it just a pip that fits between the tow or is there something missing.

It is just a PIPE that goes between the TWO. So technically there is something missing, the PIPE!
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

It's the turbo coolant return. A piece of hose shaped something like as below is what's missing.

The original is pre-formed, but any old pipe will do, so long as it clears everything and has no kinks in it.

A replacement from Toyota is only around a tenner or so, if I remember correctly. That one piece of hose was the only one that I had to replace with an OEM pre-formed one. Normal hose just won't do that tight a bend without looking a bit debatable on the kink factor side of things. I'd say go for the original, if you can.

Bit nippy in Hell then, is it? I assume it must have frozen over?

They'll not believe you though. They'll think you're being sarcastic. Look at the stick I get when I'm nice to people.
