Maybe not. If you had a cracked head your expansion tank would be filling not emptying. You have a leak some where. Fill the engine and the expansion tank to the correct levels. Drive it till it gets up to operating temperature and then immediatly check for leaks with the engine running.

Any white vapour from the exhaust , particularly noticeable on start up ?
It sounds like the head to me. When the head went on my 2.4 that was pretty much the symptoms I got. Loss of water and a fairly visible vapour cloud on start up. Other than that it ran fine.

        News!

        OK...well, there's definitely a leak.

Water comes a-drip-drip-drippin' from somewhere above the sump guard/bash plate doodad.

I can't see anything unless I take the guard off, so that's the plan for (hopefully) this weekend.

Any ideas? A knackered water pump, perhaps? Or maybe just a knackered seal on said pump? Does it still sound like the head?

Not if it's leaking. Fix the leak and, as long as you haven't overheated it, it should be fine. My money would be on the water pump.

And pay more attention to step one next time

Doubtful it's the head, possibly the front seal on the water pump. More likely one of the hoses at the front of the engine, there are loads of joints and pipes around there. Check each one thoroughly.

It was the water pump that was knackered.

While the cam belt cover was off, we discovered the pulley to the left of the water pump was missing 5 ball bearings!

So now I have a new water pump and a new cam belt kit.
