4wd not working properly

93 2.4 auto surf .4wd working only if I keep the button on the lever pressed down but the green lights on the dash board do not light. `If I put it 4wd low ,it does engage but the lights dont shows it. The green lights do come on when I press the 4wd button when the truck is moving but is intermitent and accompanied by a beeping sound.The only way to put it on 4x4 high is to stop the truck,keep the button on lever pressed down while I get the truck start moving.After few seconds I release the button (after I pick up some speed) sometimes the 4x4 stays engaged,sometimes not. Problem sorted now thanks to NERO279,an electric cable was not plug in. Cheers

there is an electric plug that was not connected and was just hanging under the engine,near the front diff.That needs to be connected with another plug wich is somewhere on the near side of the engine,about half way between top and bottom of the engine
