In our hilux surf 4runner whenever you turn the headlamps of you get an infernal bleeping for the whole time that he headlamps are on, it is simmilar to the bleep when you have the drivers door open when the key is in the ignition.

any ideas- it really drives you round the bend

Check that the front driver's door switch that controls the interior light is disconnecting properly when the door is closed. It could be earthing itself, which would trigger the "Lights left on" bleeper.

Other than a wire in the door loom itself being damaged, nope. You'll most likely find Mike's diagnosis is spot on.
