Air Con

Hey Guys

Picked up my new Hilux earlier today and think its great.

Only one problem, the Aircon doesn't work! Think this is because there isn't a fan belt on the flywheel that appears to be attached to the compressor.

Also after reading the other aircon posts it looks like the Hilux uses a now illegal gas in its system and needs a new part to use the gas in use today. Could someone confirm this please?

Also where would I get the missing fan-belt from?

belts from roughtrax, check the sticker under the bonnet should tell you what gas is in, no problem with using the old gas if it works, the problem could come when you neeed to top up recharge if you are on the old gas...it aint compatable and might mean a different gas or seals or whatever...need to know what is in your system to be sure........vehicle details please

its a 1993 on a K plate. 2.4td

I have got somone to replace the belt that runs the air con.

Now all i need to know is, can i put normal aircon gas in it!

I take it with a belt it still doesnt work, have you checked around the engine bay for a sticker - yellow I think with an 'R' number on it?

Im having the belt replaced on tuesday morning

Yellow sticker on slam panel says R12 (850g + 50g)

The Adapters To Connect To The Ac System Are Different, R12 Is The Old And R134a Is The New.

My Guess Would Be Pump Is Naff Hence Belt Removed But Needs Checking Out.

You Could Buy A Diy Top Up Bottle For Around £10, We Do Them Or Halfords ( Dare I Say That Name). These Only Fit R134a Systems.

The One We Sell Also Helps To Replenish The Seals And Cures Small Leaks.

THERE IS A CONVERSION KIT THAT YOU CAN DO YOURSELF, COMES WITH R134A GAS, ADAPTERS ETC AS NEEDED, WE SELL THEM FOR AROUND £79.

I HAVEN'T CONVERTED ONE MYSELF BUT I HAVE USED TO KITS TO TOP UP AND THEY WORK FINE AND EASY TO USE.

TRY A LOCAL MOTOR FACTOR??

I AM NOT SURE HOW MUCH A GARAGE WOULD CHARGE FOR THIS, MAY BE WORTH CHECKING OUT.

A LOT OF THE TIME YOU NEED TO REGAS THE SYSTEM TO CHECK AND SEE WHATS WRONG WITH IT, OF COURSE IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO FIND PROBLEM??

SORRY, FORGOT YOU HAVEN'T GOT BELT YET.

Right, assuming you have not got a leak in the system, it has R12 in it, I would sugest you go
1. belt on test
2. if it works....jobs done til it dont
3 if it dont you will have to change the connectors, it is very envirionmentally unfriendly to release the gas or what is left of it to atmosphere
4. if you go to a specialist (garage) they can remove the gas properly then fit new connectors then vaccuum test the system for leaks (worth while, also removes any air, moisture etc) then fill with the correct gas and lubricant. In my humble opinion NOT a DIY job if you want it tested and run properly. you cant evacuate air from a system by puting in gas fron an aerosol!!
Or you can do what others on here have done and rip it out, make a bit of space behind the bash plate and cook a bit in the few weeks 'summer' we have here!!
