Dumbass Newbie question!!

Can anyone help me with a speedo/odometer/tripmeter problem?

Being a 1993 build 2.4td I assume that the speedo is electronic and not cable driven. However, my odometer and tripmeter don't work either.

Am I right in thinking that the 3 are all connected? It has been suggested by a garage that it is a transducer fault. Can anyone shed any light on the matter? How do I confirm/pinpoint the fault and how easy is it to sort?

Any help would be greatful!

Speedo not working either?
It's either the speed sensor on the transmission, the last sensor before the transfer case, (Unplug/ broken wire/ect) or the speedo head itself is faulty.

Is the orange O/D off light blinking every three seconds when you're driving?

If the actual sender is broken you should be getting an engine or gearbox fault light.

But it may be that it is a code thats not indicated in normal mode, and you may have to properly test the fault codes to find it.

Mostly due to my crap typing! Edited to sound more english.

Open your Diagnostics box (small grey one, either on N/S wing or next to fuse box). Short E1 and TE1 with a paper clip or bit of wire, then turn ignition on and count the flashes of the engine check light, or O/D off light.

Worry that you have a problem with the Turbo, that has nothing to do with the speedo.

2 - Turbo boost pressure sensor

It may be an uncleared code from sometime in the past, disconnect the batterys for 1/2 hour, or pull the ECD fuse if you have a coded radio and try again.

Lol! The way my days gone it could be the turbo as well!!!!

Lets see this weeks disasters:-

Brakes shagged
exhaust knackered
dead speedo
sleeping odometer
Now skatty Turbo?

Do I leave fuse out for 1/2 hour or is it only 1/2 hour if its the battery?

OK stupid question of course I leave it out for 1/2 hour!!!! (wheres that slap myself smilie?)

1 is OK, thats situation normal.

It SHOULD (the ECD isn't foolproof, but generally pretty reliable) rule out the tranducer, and its wiring to the ECU. But it wouldn't hurt to just unplug it and plug it back in just in case.

Then I'd start by pulling the clocks out and making sure the all the plugs are in and the wiring looks OK. If someone has fitted a chip to alter the speed reading, they might not have wired it properly. Of even just left a plug out/loose after changing the dash face.

Sounds good Rich, only problem is I teach in the evenings! Down your way on Wednesday evening at Weeth but don't normally finish till 8.30 although I may get out at 7 if I'm lucky.
