Had a quick search on the forum and for a complete beginner the estimate was 5 hours a side.

    So for a spanner monkey.................

        £300 quid!

I got my a service and all the belts (Including cam) changed for that from a 4x4 specialist who I know isn't that cheap.

Don't know anybody your way, maybe worth asking on the forum in the General section.

        Rich.

Check out what he is saying about the drive shaft gaiters. I know you can get universal CV boots but I'm not sure about DSG
          good luck

I have a feeling that he does not know what he is doing.I have just done the 4 CV boots on my 2.4.Took me a long time but that is because I have never done a Surf before and lying on your back under vehicle is not the easiest way to do it.Now that I know the ins and outs I could do one in about 4 hours a side.

A mechanic with a hoist should easily do the job in this amount of time.Have a word to him and ask what is taking so long.If and when he finishes the job I would have it inspected by another mechanic to check for dodgey work. After this is done I suggest you find a new mechanic.

                I've got a 91' 2.4td ssr x which I brought nearly 3 years ago.
It failed its MOT on the N/S gaitor split. It was done by
Parsons of Reading as part of the MOT and took about an hour.
With the MOT it came to approx £90.

Gaiters are easy, simular for any car, but you can get surf ones out without jacking it up or taking the wheel off! Hope he's not trying to get the outer CV joint off!!!!

most good car shops sell them, but gaiters are cheap, and easy to fit so I've never bothered.

                          Others say they work.
