  • Wot No Viscous Fan!!!

    Hi,
After a prang in my lurvely surf i was investigating under the bonnet... it seems i have no Viscous Fan! if i'm right then this should sit between the belts at the front of the engine and the radiator? Is this going to cause me any problems now summer is on it's way?
Can anyone think of a reason why this would be removed?

It may have been replaced with a "Kenlowe" type electric fan, if the old viscous fan was in need of replacement, have a look at the front and back of your rad, to see if there is another one there.

One reason electric fans are fitted is so that they can be switched off when going through deep water and mud. Stops all the crap being thrown all over the engine. Serious off roaders do this mod.

So it could be that your truck has been really seriously abused off road by the previous owner.

      Or maybe not!

      (Joking btw)

There will be a small electric fan in front of the rad, to the left. It is only an auxillary so won't have the capacity to cool the engine on its own. There should be another fan in there somewhere.

      Pics please...........

I only have the 2 lower fans (Aircon I think) and the small electric one in front of the Rad (between rad and grill).. this is another thing as I have never seen this fan spinning (engine on or off, aircon on or off).
I'm going to blow my head (if not already) when the weather gets warmer aren't I?

After I had the prang (Front nearside) I dumped coolant all over my drive when I got home. new rad cap/coolant and thermostat seems to have stopped this though.
I'm going to have loads of questions over the next few months and i'll try and get some pics up soon.

I'd take all of the air con stuff off - its probably not got any refridgerant in it and is expensive to get filled. No air con = reduced load on engine + better cooling of sump + easier to work on.

And you should have a big fan between the rad and the engine - pics!

It should be in that plastic shroud just behind the radiator. Is it empty???

Ummmm - correct - you really DO NOT have a viscous fan.

I'd get one on there ASAP - contact Stormforce or Supersurf - they'll sort you out (ooo, errrr)

How the hell haven't you overheated yet????

Damn... is it going to be costly?

Well I only do short journeys and its Bl00dy freezing here in Wigan! My needle just sits halfway and almost never rises...did once when sat in traffic for a while on a warm day but even then just by about 1mm

you can get a viscous fan on ebay for £5 to £10 plus postage but if you get one make sure you get the 4 bolts aswell if your truck aint got them

I still can't believe it's not there . I suppose you get a lot more natural airflow over the radiator without it.
