egr valve

can anybody tell me what the egr valve does !!! is it ok to by pass it as i have been told it will reduce the black smoke & improve fuel econemy but dont want to damage the engine. Thought i would consult the experts for advise so any would be great

It's for reducing NOX emmisions, which are not tested for here in the U.K.

At the foot of this page there some more threads on the EGR.
