Hiya, I'm dying to get myself a 4x4 and by far Surfs just look the dogs. I know very little (nothing) of mechanics and most of you on here sound like mechanics, my question is: am I letting myself in for a whole world of trouble buying privately?? I have seen a 2.4 with around 60k on the clock for £4000.00 but am concerned that I could get stung and without the knowledge most of you guys have feel a little out of my depth (what should I check for?). Should I wait until a manual comes around??? Although I'd be no further forward. PLEASE HELP!!

No you do not need to be a mechanic!! Remember this is a specialist forum with technical sections where technically minded people post techy stuff!! If you're not happy doing it and have a garage you have faith in to do a good job then thats fine! (they can always post their techy questions on here)
If you buy a 2.4 make sure you either get proof that the head has already been replaced with a new (not reconditioned)one - demand PROOF (like the receipt) or a warranty that covers the head for as long as possible (just in case). EDIT - just reread your post - see it's a private sale. This could be good or bad depending on the person you are buying from. You need to make that judgement.
Auto/manual is personal choice - neither indicates more or less tech probs.
These are tough reliable cars, but they are mostly pushing 10 years (or more old) so they will need regular servicing and care.
Most of all they are great FUN!!! Drive a few before you decide and check out the for sale posts on here. The right one for you will come along!
