        Update

Well we found a 2.4 diesel engine on ebay which has apparently had a new head and comes with 1 months garuantee.
Now ive changed a few engines in my time but do not profess to be an expert so we pulled the old engine out today and i can honestly say ive never had such an awkward one ever The 3 top bolts on the bellhousing took an hour on thier own every bolt was like pulling teeth and i havent got the smallest hands. Getting the new one in is going to be fun, i'am contemplating splitting the transfer box and slide the gearbox back and forward as required.

Has anyone got any ideas and tried and tested ways apart from finding a double jointed japanese person with girl hands

Get it all bolted up apart from the top middle bolt (that the one that really hard to do) then if you unbolt the gearbox crossmember and lower the back end of the motor on a trolley jack, you find it easier to get to.

I have a socket thats like the socket extension flexable joints, but its all in one, so is short enough to get on the bolt and not foul the bulkhead.

Half the 2.4's I've seen that have had a engine swap, the one middle bolt is missing and to be honest I wouldn't sweat it if it wasn't in there if you get really fed up with it.

But having said that, if working on someones elses truck, I'd always make the effort to get it in.

just done one. The worst engine swap i have done, too much stuff on them, lol. I just left the box alone, had no trouble at all with that. I unbolted the torque converter and left it in the box. I even left the rad in. The hardest blot i came across was the top exhaust mount one, so i left it out, lol

How the hell did you leave the rad in i only just got it out as it was without having a radiator in the way

Without the torque convertor on the ring-gear, the motor dosn't need to go forward much before you lift it out.

But some times they get jammed in the end of the crank, and you have take the motor out with it attached, in which case the rad is in the way.

                            update

Thanks for your input TonyN and guys put the tourque converter in first then droped the engine in without the mounts on did all the bolts backup easily Then lifted it up a smidge put the mounts back on lovely. Now just got to find another spare day and remember where all the wiring and plugs go backon and hope the timings ok.
