Stuck in 4WD

As soon as they are un-plugged moving the Hi/Lo lever will not engage 4WD but it is still selectable using the button.

Thats handy to know! mine jammed in 4wd a while back, wound up the diff something wicked, front wheel spun backwards as i jacked it up, i jacked all four off the deck and just kept up and down on the shift and hi/low lever with the engine running, after several "shifts" there was a loudish thump and it came out of 4wd, went back in and out ok after that, bit hairy sitting in it running all jacked up on wood in my garage, if it'd come off i'd have wound up in the liveing room i think

This sounds really interesting but if it's not doing any harm to the car I don't understand why toyota would connect them to start with?
the ability to use lo on tarmac would be useful for manouvering heavy trailers etc but I'm concerned there maybe a reason toyota didn't do it, maybe too much torque through one axle.
Anyone got any ideas

Well, as slipping both front wheels in 4WD locked would put all torque to the back anyway, I have the feeling that the only reason is that Land Rovers and Jeeps did it that way to start with and everyone followed suit.

Probably easier to do things the way people expect than make them more flexible and get sued by idiots who hurt themselves.

Like your point about if the front was slipping you'd get the same anyway, think I will try it and see.

this is quite an interesting idea... sometimes I cant reverse a trailer backwards up a big kerb if its loaded so it could be handy. maybe you could make a switch to control it???

From what I understand you won't need an extra switch you just use the
4wd button for 4wd and the lever for low and high the car just won't asume you want 4wd when you put it in low, we already have the 4wd button there to tell it when we want 4wd.

Two questions mate
Is the 3ltr the same mod.
Am I correct in assuming this will give me 2wd Low and I will get no wind up in 2wd Low (rear wheels driving only)

To update you on the situation, I got the truck up on a ramp and found a small rubber pipe which I guess is the vacuum pipe perished. We replaced that and still nothing, ran it on the ramp with the wheels in the air forward backward pushing the 4wd button still nothing, when I push 4wd button I can hear what sounds like an electric motor running in the diff but still nothing...

Still stuck in 4wd and now the engine has started missing under power

There's a few other things you could try, but I think it would be safest and best to get the diff apart or to a garage, and have a proper look.

Yes I agree, I would like Tony to take a look but can't get hold of him, guessing he's away at the moment.

At least I found the engine missing problem, it cut out completely tonight left me stranded by the side of the road, on inspection it seems that a wire to the solenoid had come loose, one new bullet clip and bingo.

Off topic, but just noticed your location... is that Symonds Yat in Herefordshire?

as mentioned before,you should not use 4wd hi or lo at all on the road,(unless you have very slippery conditions) so that you can compensate for the drive.there is no centre diff on a2nd gen surf(unlike a lr) so our 4wd is only part time,not full time as for a lr.
the suggestion of fitting manual hubs is probably the best way forward,as it takes the possibility of axle wind up away
i have done so and am able to get 2wd/lo(absolutely fine for pulling a skip over 300 yards a few days ago)

Heh. Used to live in Leominster. Built a massive conservatory for a guy in Symonds Yat. Great scenery and good shooting. Bet it's getting $$$$$$ cold there now!
