guide to fitting valve clearance shims

Anyone know how to fit valve clearance shims and how to measure also what the valve clearances are?

Exhaust clearance

The exhaust valve clearance is .40-.50mm. We had a discussion about this on the Australian Surf forum after I read the above post.

cheers for that guys off to machine mart for a micrometer now anyone know where to get that tool from the one that slots under tha camshaft

If you can borrow or rent one, then do it. I understand the units cost something like A$400.

I went ahead and lifted the cam out. If you go the route of lifting the cam out, then you might as well drop in a 3L cam while you are at it. Here's a bit more information on the 3L cam -

Does that tool work on a bucket and shim camshaft? It looks like a general purpose tool that places a load on the valve head and then pulls the spring collar down.

Many thanks for that one Tony one is going to be on order on Friday when the pay check comes in as with the head getting hold of a 3l cam is not a problem does it give better performance or is it just better to have my old cam played with eg by Kent Cams low down torque is what im after not all out speed as the Surf is not a racing car.

3L cam

The 3L is a truck engine, a normally aspirated truck engine, the cam was designed as a truck cam. The 3L cam is not a high-end cam like the Tighe Cam. If you read the thread one fellow felt that the 3L cam gave him more low-end torque in his 2LT. I'm not sure what he means, it would have been more precise to state the actual RPMs he was using.

I'll probably be able to put my 3L cam in next week. I'll give a report back on it as soon as I can. If you see my last post on that thread you will see that I note that there is very little overlap between intake and exhaust phases (good for low-end). However, the lift and duration of the intake lobe is a bit more. I expect that the cam will prove to be superior both in power and economy in the 2LT, but I'll have to wait until I actually try it to confirm it.
