has the fuel filter been changed?it sounds like you have air leaking into the fuel system from some where.

I had EXACTLY the same issue.

Tried tightening the fuel pipes on the filter, replaced the filter, had fuel pump done etc etc etc.

No one knew how to fix it, including three mechanics (one a Toyota specialist), all the guys on here, a fuel pump technician guy (who made the problem worse).

Good luck mate, I solved my problem - by selling the daft lump!!!!!

Try tightening the screw on top of the black button on top of the pump primer........

That cured the same problem for one of the lads on here (he just emailed me).

when the digger had been stud (for 2 years) over time water condences in the tank from the diesel (i did not beleave it at first) but we droped the tank off draned all the fuel put it all back on changed all fuel filters primed it up still runs perfect to this day all a long it was just water and air traped all over the place messy job but worth it (you can get car cheap with this same problem
well my surf been stud for 3 years i will have it fully clean fuel pips filter tank

try changing the fuel lines to clear hose that way you can see if it is drawing air in or spray all fuel lines, pump, filters, ext, with wd40 or some highly flammable aerosal , if the engine revs automatically you know there is a leek,
              hope that helps
