what is this plug and whats it do

just a quick question, on my 2.4td surf there is a plug with 2 pins that connects to the air intake just above the air filter housing, the part it connects to looks like its made of plastic but has again 2 terminals inside it,
what is this thing and what does it do, and what will it do if its not connected

Don't know the 2.4, but I'd guess its an air intake temp sensor. my 3rd gen has one. tried disconnecting it with the engine running just for fun.....nothing happened!

superb thats all i needed to know,
i dont know if its psychological or not but mine wasnt connected at all, and there seemed to be a lot of smoke from the exhaust,
since ive connected and run it theres a hell of a lot less smoke than before, just cant see why it would affect it though
