Diesel engine making strange noise!

HI,
Yet another strange noise query!!
My MK3 2.4 Diesel pickup engine has started making a really strange noise when I put the power on. It sounds like a metallic fluttering or twittering ( a bit like an Acme Thunderer (the one with the pea in it!) referee's whistle blown slowly. It only happens when I put my foot fown and the engine has to work hard e.g. uphill or accelerating in lower gears. As soon as I take my foot off the noise disappears. It started a few weeks back and seems to have got worse as I'm doing 100 miles a day now. Any ideas pleezz???

Try all air intake pipes and turbo pipes if you have them. Check for exhaust blows near the front by getting someone to cover the exhaust end for 2 seconds at a time.

Also check the Exhaust Manifold for any leaks were it joins the Head.
