  • 2.4 Gearbox options

    Mines gone bang
    and has only 4th available,
mechanic we use says the last time he saw this result on a Daihatsu,

it was a replacement, as a repair was not fiancially viable.

Looking around ebay, there appear to be some immediate differences

(speedo connection being either mechanical or electronic)

but comparing my knackered one side by side with One I found initially,
he further noticed a number of electrical switches missing,
and no plugged holes in the casing where they might be added.

He suggested One might might have been a connection to the ECU device to tell it what gear was selected to prevent damage at high revs?

I offered the speed alarm as another possible outlet

but what else might I watch out for on (slightly) earlier donor cars.

I'm not expecting a perfect match, I can even do without the speedo if neccesary, but I must be able to get 4WD (with or without indicator)
    for towing on grass

The transmission you need is the A340F, and your speedo is electronic, so the trans should have a speed sensor socket and the ECU socket ect.......

The transfer case thats bolted on to the rear of the transmission deals with the drive to the front wheels.
    Hope this helps.

The initial replacement box I sourced looked OK,

he was able to ascertain road gears by selecting a gear with a short screwdriver where the gear stick would be,
and rotate the drive shaft to see the other end moving great...

Unfortunately he rang back shortly after to say there was nothing happening on the front wheel drive,
I wondered if it needed a vacuum pipe connected up somewhere as I though i'd heard that on other systems, he said regardless of this, it was apparently inop, so probably best bring him another

      bugger!

On the silver tube that goes accross the top of the engine with EFI DIESEL on it has two outlets for the small vacuum pipes, if these aren't connected then you won't have 4WD

A340F is a Automatic Transmission, I think he needs a manual box

Then he should have said that! All Surfs are auto unless stated.

No idea if these will help, but there's a couple of manuals for manual transmissions up here:

                    Manual

I thought all the good ones were

Theres One tiny hose which looks like a breather I reckon
crosses between both stick housings, and another longer One
from back a bit from those and then rearwards towards speedo outlet

On my original unit there are these Electrical points

                    1;bell housing end (reversing lights)
                    2' N/S rear by sticks (4WD or low/high indicators)
Think I noted another One on the n/s as well have to check that

Check out long ron silver, he's breaking an auto and a manual 2.4 2nd gens, and the gearbox is still available (I think) minus the flywheel.
