Hello fellow surfers.

My trucks been off the road for months now. INitially it had just cut out on me when I approached a toll booth on the M6 toll. Got it towed back home and the mechanics been working on it since. Basically, it just won't fire up since it cut out on the motorway. It turns and turns over but won't fire up.
The fuel pump has been replaced because that was broken but now the mechanic who's a friend just can't work out whats wrong. He thinks its electrical but I thought I'd try asking here where the experts reside. Any ideas that I can pass on to him guys? Many thanks.

Sorry mate but I don't think your friend the mechanic has a clue. No way of diagnosing the problem online without a lot more info so take it to someone like TonyN (if close enough) who may be able to help.

I would take it to TonyN ideally but the trucks stuck in gloucester so no chance of that.

Has he checked the basic things like cracking injectors to check fuel flow, checking glow plugs and associated electrics, maybe even a compression test? Is the timing right? Why was the pump replaced? What was wrong with it? Was the new pump installed correctly? Was the new pump new or second hand? I could go on and on but not knowing what has or has not been checked or done makes it very difficult.

Like Nev said, 1st up make sure there is fuel getting to the injectors, then check the air filter is OK, once you have fuel and air thats all a deisel needs. If it still won't start it needs a compression test to verify its mechanically sound and go from there. If it has compression you should be able to get it to start at least.

You may need to get the injectors checked, thgen the pump line pressure to check the pump is OK.

If its not getting fuel to the injectors check the spill control valve, and check its getting power from the ECU. DON'T check the spill control valve by connecting it to the battery like you could a fuel cut off valve, they are not the same, and the spill control valve only needs 4 volts or so. If there is no power to the valve its a ECU or immobilser issue.

Thanks for the replies guys. The mechanic replaced the ECU and the truck starts up ok now. Still a bit of black smoke which may be due to dodgy fuel pump.

Was the fuel pump bench tested and calibrated before it was fitted?

Even new out of the box, the pump may not be calibrated to suit your vehicle, as it may also be used on land cruisers which require more fuel ( larger engine)

It may have been factory set as a compromise so that either will run, but not perfectly.


If not, then it needs to go to a proper diesel injection specialist to get it set.
