Help Please, noticed power steering jumpy, thought fan belt loose, had a look and the pully is not square on to the pump. Centre nut is loose, tried to tighten but it just spins? any ideas?

I had this happen a couple of years ago. The fix is a b1tch!
I also could not loosen the pulley nut because the key had shattered. BUT - good old Toyota - you cannot remove the bolt securing the pump to the engine with the pulley on.
SOOOoooooo ....
I loosened the housing bolt and slid it forward until it hit the back of the pulley - then squeezed a hacksaw down the front of the engine and cut the head off the bolt. (all in all about 3/8" of the bolt removed). Then the fun starts - you slide the bolt forward again until it hits the back of the pulley and cut again.
Here I get to quote my wife's favourite film.
... etc... etc... etc.
I think I had to make about 4 or 5 cuts to remove the bolt completey.
THEN - I tried replacing the bolt. It looks like a metric thread, but (on my surf anyway) it is not - I had to get a special bolt for it from a wrecked surf in a wreckers yard.
I spent 9 years as a mechanic in the army - I thought a ferret (http://www.military-vehicle.net/ferret.htm) was possibly the worst vehicle on earth to work on.
Then I bought a surf ......... great car - b1tch to work on.

ah bollo! same thing happened to me last week. was just about to post up for advice lol!
well at least i know its not the pump i need to replace. there is something sheared off on mine now - at present it looks like a tuning fork - would this be the woodruff bit? or is that summat else?
at the moment im not sure what bit i need to source? any advice?

just to clarify - did you have to take the power steering pump pulley off altogether then? your post says how you got the old bolt out, but not how you got the new one in. if you had to cut the old one to get it out, surely you wont be able to get new one in with pulley still on?Originally posted by hkpstefanI had this happen a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly, radiator out then using a long extention bar (which can lose some torque through the gun) put it through the grill onto the socket on the nut. But leave the belt on the pulley so it doesn't turn.
Thinking about it I don't no if a swan neck ring spanner will go on the nut without taking the rad out....maybe worth a try???
I know the nuts can be ###### tight to get off though and the pulley itself.

Trouble is the pulley is not attached to the shaft so will let the nut turn easy.
