Could it be the water pump seal, they can leak a fair amont of water in a short time, and can fail after/due to a cam belt change.

Te seal on the shaft from the drive cog. you would have a drip from the bottom of the cam belt cover.

So is that a "yes I have a water leak" ?

If so it may well be te pump shaft seal, although I don't think they are servicable, it'll need a new pump. If indeed thats where it's leaking from.

I was clogging it down to the coast the other weekend
hoping to beat the BH traffic, I think I know where I came unstuck as its likey that bit where it weaves about throught the trees near Stowmarket.

however as i say given they have my reg it was either

                    rear facing GATSO
                    or

man in van craning his neck to cop my rear plate
we'll have to wait and see

I'm about to compose request for picture which I'll pop on here.

                    Now

I topped up rad with about 3 pints of water at lunchtime
and (touch wood) its back to its normal operating temp according to gauge

Theres been an Air-con sized puddle beneath it for a week or so

and since I've used the AC on & off over that period
I thought it might be that.

However given I return to similar spot each night I've noticed it haden't dissapeared as water should
but instead leaves a very slightly oily residue, HMmmmmm!

Not used AC since last years top-up if that means anything

The damp patch could be the air-con lubricating oil.
You say you haven't used it since last year after a top-up. Were the seals ever replaced when the gas was refilled? if not, the seals may have gone hard and are now leaking. Air-con needs to be switched on at least once a month for a few minutes, regardless of what the season is, to keep the system and seals lubricated.

Ahhh now that would make sense.

No the seals were not replaced at top-up and in fact last summer it worked fine.

I was hoping its first top-up since god knows when
                      might be enough

Would I be right in saying an old (92') system might need refilling every couple of years anyway or is it worth having new seals?

If any air-con system need re-filling that often, then there is a leak somewhere. Air-con gass should last at least five or six years if the system is in good working order.

When your air-con was re-gassed, it should have been filled with the new type R13a gas, had new seals and re-filling connectors fitted. Nearly all the 2nd gen Surfs that were imported had the old R12 gas which is now prohibited.

                          OK
after some ringing around when most people said the don't supply the old gas

I can't now rememer just what happened actually all I seem to remember was waiting for an Hour or so whilst it was worked on,

shows how much attention I paid.

I'd best dig out the old reciept

                          cheers

Do you think you could enlarge that document, it's too small!

Looks like the conversion was done, but did you go back a week later for you free leak test?

                                No.

                                It got. Missed out,
Although it says no leaks prior to work and up since it was done last summer,

There were no signs of leaks
                                Up untill a fortnight ago

But yes I should have gone back
