  • steering idler arm play

hello all you surfers, i've got a small ammount of play in my idler arm, does anyone know how much play you are allowed for an mot? apparantly you can change the bushes, does anyone know how much work is involved in doing this and do you need any specialist tools to do the job? any help would be very gratefully recieved, cheers

Hi Mine failed for that (tiny bit of movement) the arm cost £75 inc vat and delivery from milners. Job is easy 3 bolts ? 17mm and a crown nut. the tricky bit was splitting the ball joint. 30min job off and on.

Read this thread http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ad.php?t=32017 then look at the piccy attached.

I was going to just change bushes myself but the truck had to pass the mot so I played safe and bought the new Arm. I took it apart just now to be able to tell you whats involved and see for myself.

Once the arm is off you remove the cap "A" to do this with mine I had to use and old chisle to break the joint all the way around then twist it off with a wrench.

Underneath I think it was a 19mm nut you remove nearly all the way "B"

then I took it out the vice tipped it upside down and hit the nut on the vice. this drove it out with little effort. Remove the nut fully and pull out the arm "F"

Then pull the rubber cover off "D"

"C" &"E" are the bushes I belive, I cleaned up around the edges and used a flat bladed screwdriver to work the first bush out the other bush fell out while I was doing this.

      Hope this helps

I was right to buy the full arm as if you can see on the piccy marked by "G" The bottom section of the arm is worn and the bushes would not have helped.

      Good Luck
