tyre wear

Hi, i bought new tyres last year and had the tracking done at the same time.

I have noticed lately that there is wear on the outside of both front tyres, more noticeably on the near side tyre.

I went to have the tracking done this morning, and the guy put the lasers on, and said that the tracking is spot on and he would be robbing me of £35 if he were to pretend to make any adjustments.

Could it be the front suspension that needs replacing???
Although i would have thought that it would have been the inside of the tyre and not the outside that would have worn if it were the shocks.

On the surf you can have the camber adjusted too if thats out it can knock the $$$$ out of the outide of the tyres if you get under the surf and look at the bolts that hold the wishbones on. they are of a off set type so you can dial the camber in positive just have it checked you might have to find a specialist in the yellow pages dont think kwik fit do the camber thing.

The outsides are worn my Surf's front tyres also, I assumed it was due to the excessive roly-poly nature of the vehicle when cornering putting more wear on the outside edge. It doesn't appear to have any camber on the front wheels.

I`ll have a look tomorrow under the vehicle.
Looks like i will have to try and find a reputable firm to do a full steering allignment then if what you say is correct (i have no reason to doubt you )

I may give Toyota a ring and see how much they charge.
I dont really want to go back to ATS as they should have pointed out the camber may need setting correctly if he new exactly what he was doing when trying to consider the options for what may be causing the wear.

Actually before i had the new tyres fitted, then the wear was on the inside of the tyres ???

Going to fast round roundabouts will scuff the outsides of the front tyres.

Hi, I have the same problem, Have had it adjusted twice now and still not right, so I took it to a firm that can check and adjust the camber etc.

He checked and said he was unable to adjust camber due to excessive wear on on of the track rod ends, and the steering idler.

So, I have to replace one inner track rod end ( although I will probably replace inner and outer on both sides) and the steering idler, all parts are available from roughtrax for about £150.00.

Once thats done then I'll take it back to camber guy and get it all set up.
I know it seems expensive, but I paid nearly £400.00 for new tyres a while back( before I knew about the Idler etc) so I don't want to knacker them prematurely!

Hope this info helps.( Oh BTW neither of these faults was picked up in a recent MOT test)

I must admit though that i am suprised that Toyota did not notice the tyre wear when doing the vehicle check whilst it was in for the steering rod recall.

You need to take into account the age of the vehicle, and previous owners poor maintenance.

My Garage didn't notice the fautly steering Idler or track rod ( or the leaking fuel pump come to think of it) when they did the MOT so no surprise that other stuff gets overlooked by so called professionals.

But if you taclke them over it then the answer is always that " it was ok when they checked it"

Bugga, getting nowhere fast here.
After 2 hours telephoning around, the only people in our area that seem to have the equipment to be able to do the job, (AFAIK) are the last people i would let near our car after the last performace i had with them.

I dont want to have to take a day off work to travel to have the job done but its starting to look like thats what i`m gonna have to do

One of our neighbours used to work as a mechanic, and he suggested taking it to another ATS near to us, as he knows the people well who work there and said that their equipment has all been recently calibrated so i should get a very accurate reading.

He also said that the people have all worked there for years and know what they are doing and do it well.

So they checked it all out, and said that altough the tracking is not too far out, the steering line is way out which is most likely the reason for the scrubbing tyres.
He did go into detail to describe why.

Anyway, i told them to go ahead and do the job and the guy did take his time to make sure that everything was adjusted to the correct settings.
He also seemed to know that the settings were the same for the surf as they are for the 4runner so this inspired me with a little more confidence that the job would be done correctly.

So i will give it 2 or 3 weeks and see if the tyres still feel like they are scrubbing.

What do you all think ???
Could he be correct with what he was saying and has done or not ?????
