If you don't tackle these relatively simple jobs, you're never going to learn anything about your truck.

Open the bonnet, have a good look over the engine to familiarise yourself with what parts you're going to have to remove, have a digital camera handy and take some photos so you can use them as a reference when the time comes to fit it all back together again. Or maybe post the pics on here so we know what you're refering to when you're stuck.
Working on these engines isn't rocket science, but as long as you take your time and put everything you remove from the engine into a box, you know that the box needs to be empty when you're finished.
There's enough information and photos on here to help anyone, even Stormforce, whatever thier level of mechanical skills.

You don't even need fancy/special tools, just a basic socket set and spanners ranging from 8mm up to 19mm, a set of allen keys, pliers (adjustable pipe grips (parrot beak) are the best) and a couple of screwdrivers.


Go on, go and get you fingernails dirty, you can always re-apply the nail polish when you've finished!

It must be true cause i even done my own service this year and changed the turbo and i have had a surf for nearly 3 years now.it took me nearly 2 weeks to do my turbo and i think it was only 18 nut/bolts to come off but i couldn't manage long each day cause of my dodgy hip but i still got in there and done it and was pleased that i did do it and get the surf up and running again.Like whats been said take your time and take pics and note of whats come off from where and you cant go wrong

Go easy on the poor bloke Vince. He wants to have a crack at it but wants someone who knows what they're doing to help him out. If no-one's forthcoming no doubt he'll give it a go, but I don't think there's any harm in asking for help.

Had to be said, I was begining to think the search button was bust!


He'll be saving a wad of cash by tackling the job himself, and will gain some experience and knowledge at the same time. No harm done.

Ha haaaa!!! How did you guess? I am sat in an office now - no suit though, got a jumper and shirt on as I have just been out to lunch with my girlfriend and her baby.

I have never owned an 'old' car before and so have never been brave enough to do any mecahnics. However, I am not stupid and am good at 'technical' stuff but don't wanna mess things up. I mess about with my guitars / amps / equipment etc so can do fiddly stuff, I am just wary of breaking my new motor that's all.

As for getting my fingernails dirty... what fingernails? I bit them all off when the mechanic told me he needed to send my surf away to a diesel specialist to fix the fuel pump!!!!!!! :o).
