my head went about 6 months ago,i got a new one fitted by a guy that came recommended who turned out to be a right numpty.it took him eight weeks to do it and ever since the e.m.l light has been on and the turbo light does not come on and it smokes loads when i start it.
i've taken it to three other mechanics who say it was put back together badly but have not done me any favours in putting it right. the e.m.l has been diagnosed as code four but none of them know what that is.can any one help me with a good mechanic in the essex area,

Code 4 is Coolant temp sensor.

i have a 2.4 1993 surf.
i am still driving it,is this a no no with the e.m.l on.
all my readings are normal

Its probably not going as well as it should, the ECU limits power when the engine is really cold, normally via the gearbox shifting, for the first 10 secs or so, if its not getting a temp reading the ECU will think its perminently cold.

It probably won't hurt it, but its not the ideal situation.

I make sure the plug is actually on the sender.

I think Tony might be right and when the head was done they simply forgot to plug it in. I suspect the engine will be overfueling a little without the signal from the temp sensor to tell the ECU when it up to operating temp.
