  • Engine seized, ebay it?

    Hi!

Well, on christmas eve my beloved K reg surf's 2.4 auto engine seized. It was taken away on a flatbed to my local garage who tell me it needs a new engine.

I have been quoted £650 inc vat for an engine and I'd then need to get it fitted. I was planning on selling the surf beforehand as I couldn't really afford to run it as I am now working further from home than before.

The rear window motor has also stopped working.

However, the vehicle has brand new tyres (done 40 miles on them) has just been MOT'd and taxed for 12 months.

I thought I would ask advice here about what to do. as far as I can see it I have few choices. Fitting a new engine seems pointless to me as I plan to sell it and if I'm selling it with a second-hand engine, I'd be hard pushed to make back what I paid for engine and fitting.

The choices as I see it are:

    1. get a s$$$$yard to collect it and claim the tax back and see if I can sell the tyres off separately.
    2. Put it on ebay with a reserve of the 12 months tax so at least I know if it does go I get that back
    3. offer it around to anyone that wants one for spares and has a flatbed through other sites etc.

    What do you folks think?

    edit why can't I type Scr4pyard?

      yeah, I contacted Stevo

I can honestly say he was the only one I phoned that actually seemed to care about what he was selling and offered genuinely helpful advice.

Unfortunately as i plan to sell the surf, his price was more than I wanted to pay. If I was keeping th truck I'd have seriously considered it as he really sounded like he knows his stuff.

dunno really - You don't seem to see them often on ebay like that.

I guess I was hoping to get enough to buy a *very* cheap runabout (like my old peugeot 205 which was ace).

          My rough calculation was : If I send it to the s c r a p y a r d

I can get about £170 back on the tax
The two most recently fitted tyres were £70 quid each so I might get £30 odd each for them seeing as they only did 40 miles to work and back

beyond that anything is a bonus. What do you lot reckon would be a fair price?

The CD player I'll stick in the wife's RAV4, but I could include a cassette player/radio if anyone actually wanted it.

I suppose it depends what someone was buying it for - if it's to be broken down for spares then I'd take the stuff that I'd fitted out and sell that separately. If it was for a rebuild project, then obviously things like the new tyres would need to be included!

I'm currently leaning towards sticking it on ebay with a reserve of about £250 and hoping for the best.

It was a great car and I kept it in good nick - other stuff it had was a thatcham cat 2 immobiliser with certificate and Nokia hands free car kit.

there's a shot of it in its heyday here

Set the e-bay reserve for £400. It's worth that to someone even if they have to fit a new engine.

If you 'break it' You should be able to make at least £700.

            Four doors £40 each.
            Tailgate £50.
Tailgate motor if it's working OK £40.
            Bonnet, Wings, £30 - £40 each.
            Lights £10 each.
            Complete interior £140.
            Alloys with tyres £120.
Genuine wheel arch extensions £ £80-£100.
            Rear axle £?
            Side steps £40.
            Body shell complete £200 - £300?

            Etc. Etc. Etc.

            All estimates.

Worth doing if you have the time/space.

I might have the bonnet off you if you do!

that's my problem - no space. it's currently on the garage forecourt

£400 sounds okay - I can get something to get me back and forth to work for that. Any higher reserve than that and I think it'll put people off.

Incidentally, I plan to get it up on ebay this weekend

Would it be bad etiquette to post the link here when I do?

cool, just thought I'd ask first.

I'm not regular enough on this site to know what's frowned upon

anything the birthday boy tells about what he did today, will be frowned upon..and range rovers. otherwise, you should be ok...
