Hello everyone, does anyone know how many belts there are on the crank pulley? I was checking mine and can only see three but there appears to be a pulley for one more - nearest the engine. I can see what looks like a broken belt, there also seems to be space for another belt on the alternator ( only one on there at the moment) and also room on the pulley above the alternator ?

All these empty pulleys seem to be in line, so i'm thinking i've had a belt go. Am i right ? What does this belt do ?

It's a 1992 2.4 ssrx, any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Belt sizes are -

      13a0840 (power steering),
      13a1295 ( air cond),
      13a1040 (alternator) X2

These are Aussie part nos.May be slightly different over there but the lengths are right. If one broke replace them all as they are probably all worn.

OK calmer now, had a proper look, no tears blurring my vision.
Thanks a lot for the speedy response Gemini and Neville - if i had stayed on line and not hidden in the cupboard under the stairs i would have been able to respond to your prompt help.
It looks like one of the alternator belts is the culprit. Lets see if the warranty decides to cover this or if it's "wear and tear"

I am new to 4x4's and diesels, so a couple more newbie questions for you

        1. Why is there two alternator belts ?
        2. Am i alright driving on only one belt ? (to the garage)
        3. Do both alternator belts follow the same route via the fan ?

        Thanks again

          1. The Alternator controls a number of things on the Surf and also has a Vacuum Pump Attached so I assume it is a sort of backup system. If one breaks there is still the other one to get you far enough to get a replacement.
          2. Yes (replace both ASAP)
          3. Yes

Cheers Neville, this sounds like a good time to do a you said and replace all four. I may as well do the timing belt and the rad hoses while i'm at it.
