Turbo noise?

A healthy, well maintained turbo will whistle, plain and simple. I have 2 turbos, the more you boost, the more it whistles. I live in the land of a million imported nissan skylines......they all whistle. My MX6 whistles, my old 200sx turbo whistled, my hilux whistles......TURBOS WHISTLE!
Black smoke is either bad injectors or bad fuel pump timing.

Someone asked,"how do I know my turbo's working?"
Easy, buy a boost gauge.

If you concerned about the condition of the shaft (we don't have a ball bearing turbo) pull the intake off the turbo, spin the compressor wheel with your finger, if it spins freely that's good. Then see if you can wiggle it back and forth to ensure you don't have excessive shaft play (1mm or so is normal)

Quiet new factory turbos are due to rediculously low boost levels ~4psi and better engine bay sound proofing, nothing else.

Sweet, I was used to boost pipes blowing off in my face where the drones on the line didnt tighten the clamps properly, now that makes you cr*p at 2am. Yes I agree, they all make a noise, but you must also agree that some are a lot noisier than others laters

different levels of sound definately! different turbos have varying pitched blades on the compressor wheel, different inlet sizes, and running at higher PSI makes a huge difference. When I'm running a pod filter on my MX6 turbo,it's a lot louder than my K&N panel. My mazda whistles like I a mofo when it's running as low as 8psi, at 14psi when the external wastegate roars open people just about drive off the road.

The sound in the surf is no where near as loud. But you can still here it. The sound insulation in the surf is also very good. The quiet cabin was one of the reasons I liked the surf enough to buy it.
