LOL, that's not a cat, there's no cat on a 2.4TD surf. Andy's spot on, it's a flex pipe so your turbo doesn't get pulled clean off your manifold.
I love the whistle on the surf, but my mazda MX6 is running 19psi and you can't hear the radio when the wastegate screams!

Sorry my mistake, yes it is a flexible pipe, i was reading the Surf Owner's Manual Book on page 75 it mentioned a 3 way Cat Converter but that was for gasoline only.

                turbo hits

I think you should check the turbo if the noise is increasing, the turbo noise supose to be a nidle noise.
If is more than that you should check the turbo gasket a seal paper in the exust of the turbo....

                hope this help!!!

At 9psi boost I get a lovely soothing whistle
At 15psi I get a REAL WHISTLE but that is only for trotting up long steep hills.
Normal running is set at 9psi

                    Oh dear!!

Seriously-Is there something wrong with both of my vehicles?? Neither of them whistle at all.
We used to have a Pajero (okay, laugh if you want, I learnt an expensive lesson there) which had a whine so bad that, when i was on and off the gas a lot, sounded like a cop was after me!

Yep, sounds like not enough boost!!!

                          WIND IT UP

                          9psi is good
                          11psi is better
14psi and it pulls like a tugboat

WARNING: Only do boost upgrades with an accurate boost gauge fitted correctly!

                            No- Iwill not!

Boost stays standard on my Surf! I won't WIND IT UP, as these donks are already stressed to the max without any performance mods.

                              One small question

How do test that my turbo is actually working in the first place, let alone figure out what the boost is, or even change the boost??

Answers to all three questions much appreciated.

                              Cheers

No, I think these guys are pulling a leg or two , although my turbo does whistle it isnt supposed to, the whistle is the sound of a slightly worn bearing, when it gets louder you can bet the exhaust smoke will increase in proportion then its time for a rebuild. Theres a marine engineer somehwere on this forum that does it, I reckon he's the one to talk to.
